The majority of Life Flight’s patients are from the central and lower North Island and the upper South Island.
Patients can be flown nationwide, dependent on their medical needs.
Wellington Hospital is the tertiary referral centre for the lower North Island and upper South Island. This gives it a catchment population of approximately 1,000,000.
The hospital’s Intensive Care Unit supports seven public hospitals: Wairau, Nelson, Masterton, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Hutt and Taranaki.
Wellington Hospital is responsible for intensive care patients in those regions who cannot access the care they require locally.
To manage such a large area, Wellington Hospital uses Life Flight to perform the necessary emergency air transfers via plane or helicopter with specialist medical teams on-board.
